10 Fascinating Facts to Celebrate 250 Years of Jane Austen

10 Fascinating Facts to Celebrate 250 Years of Jane Austen

This year marks 250 years since the birth of Jane Austen, one of the most beloved authors in English literature. From Pride and Prejudice to Emma, her novels continue to captivate readers around the world with their wit, insight, and timeless romance.

To honour this milestone, we’re sharing some of our favourite - and lesser-known - facts about the woman behind the words.

1. Her Books Were Published Anonymously

Jane Austen’s name didn’t appear on her books during her lifetime. Her first novel, Sense and Sensibility, was published in 1811 with the mysterious byline: "By a Lady." Even many of her neighbours were unaware that she was a published author.

2. Pride and Prejudice Was an Instant Hit

The first edition of Pride and Prejudice sold out within a year of publication in 1813. More than two centuries later, it still sells over 100,000 copies annually - a testament to its enduring popularity.

3. She Wrote a Scandalous Novella Entirely in Letters

Before her famous novels, Austen penned Lady Susan - a sharp and scandalous novella told entirely through letters. It features one of her most unrepentantly wicked heroines, and it’s well worth a read.

4. She Earned Just £684 From Her Books

Although her works now generate millions through film adaptations, merchandise, and book sales, Jane Austen earned less than £700 during her lifetime from her writing.

5. Her Work Is a Costume Drama Favourite

Austen’s novels have been adapted into over 70 films and TV shows, ranging from faithful period dramas to modern takes like Clueless and Bridget Jones’s Diary.

6. She Never Married - But Wrote the Best Love Stories

Despite creating iconic romantic pairings - Elizabeth and Darcy, Emma and Knightley - Jane Austen never married herself. Her insight into relationships came from observation, not experience.

7. She Rewrote the Rules of the Romantic Novel

At a time when most female characters in fiction were passive and predictable, Austen’s heroines were bold, witty, and independent. She gave women a voice on the page - and changed the literary landscape forever.

8. Her Letters Were (Tragically) Destroyed

After her death, Jane’s beloved sister Cassandra burned many of her personal letters - possibly to protect her privacy. The missing pieces remain one of the great mysteries of literary history.

9. She’s on the £10 Note

In 2017, Jane Austen became one of the very few authors to be featured on a UK banknote. Her portrait appears on the £10 note alongside one of her most famous quotes: "I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading!"

10. She’s Still a Fashion Icon

Austen was known for her social commentary - and that included fashion. Muslin gowns, bonnets, spencers and gloves often feature in her novels, and today, her legacy continues to inspire bookish apparel (including our own Pride & Prejudice t-shirt!).
